Synopsis

A spacious, gothic-style manor house on the outskirts of a home counties market town

Abigail and Louise, two estranged sisters in their mid-twenties, find themselves back in their childhood home under the looming shadow of their father, Clifford, a once-celebrated political figure. Abigail, the quiet and reclusive sister, has spent years trying to maintain the crumbling family estate, while Louise, a wild and unpredictable force, returns with a chaotic energy that threatens to upend the fragile peace. The arrival of Dawn, Clifford’s much younger fiancée, only exacerbates the existing tensions, as long-buried secrets and simmering resentments surface. Ray, Clifford’s brother-in-law, and Juan and Caterina, acrobats with their own mysteries, add to the intricate web of relationships and conflicts that define this dysfunctional family.

The play is a raw and gripping exploration of family dynamics, mental health, and personal identity. The play’s tone is darkly comedic and intense, capturing the volatile mix of emotions that arise when deeply flawed characters are forced into close proximity. Through sharp, often brutal dialogue and vivid character portrayals, Johnson delves into the complexities of love, hate, and the desperate need for acceptance within a family.
