Synopsis

A university professor’s office

John, a university professor on the cusp of tenure, finds his world unraveling when Carol, a struggling student, accuses him of sexual harassment and attempted rape. What begins as a seemingly innocuous office meeting spirals into a high-stakes battle of wills, as Carol’s accusations threaten to destroy John’s career, reputation, and personal life. As the power dynamic shifts dramatically between teacher and student, both characters grapple with issues of perception, intent, and the consequences of their actions.

Mamet’s incendiary play delves into themes of power, gender politics, and the dangers of miscommunication and escalating tension. The playwright’s signature staccato style amplifies the characters’ frustration and inability to truly understand each other. “Oleanna” is a provocative exploration of academic politics, political correctness, and the weaponisation of language, leaving audiences questioning their own biases and interpretations of the events unfolding on stage.
