Synopsis
England & Canada, 2000s
Girl stands before a cracked mirror, her reflection fragmented like the family she once knew. In one shard, she’s a wide-eyed child watching her mother transform into a stranger; in another, she’s a rebellious teen snorting lines of cocaine off a Canadian kitchen counter. Anoushka Warden’s “My Mum’s a Twat” hurls us headlong into the chaotic world of a young woman grappling with the ultimate betrayal – a mother seduced by the hollow promises of a new-age cult.
The stage becomes a pulsating, ever-shifting landscape of memory and emotion as Girl ricochets between the stifling conformity of her father’s home in Devon and the intoxicating freedom of her Canadian summers. Warden’s razor-sharp wit slices through the absurdity of Natashiralandi’s spiritual mumbo-jumbo, laying bare the raw hurt of abandonment that festers beneath Girl’s armor of sarcasm. The air crackles with the energy of youthful defiance as Girl plunges into a world of drugs, sex, and rock ‘n’ roll, each experience a middle finger raised to the mother who chose enlightenment over motherhood. Yet in quiet moments, when the haze of rebellion clears, we glimpse the vulnerable child still yearning for a love cruelly withheld. Through Girl’s unflinching narrative, Warden crafts a searing exploration of family, identity, and the fierce resilience of the human spirit in the face of profound loss.
