Synopsis
A rural Russian village
Anna stands at the edge of a small village, the vast Russian landscape stretching out before her, encapsulating both freedom and isolation. When Anna returns to her native village after years of living abroad, her arrival stirs up memories and confrontations with the past, especially with her old friend Masha. As Anna reconnects with the village, the play delves into the juxtaposition of the familiar and the foreign, the personal and the collective.
Narshi’s writing, brought to life through Dugdale’s translation, is marked by its lyrical quality and deep empathy for the characters’ struggles. The play’s setting in rural Russia serves as a powerful backdrop for exploring themes of home, displacement, and the passage of time. My captures the essence of returning to one’s roots and the inevitable changes that come with the passage of time and distance.
