Synopsis

East London, 1980s. Amidst the gritty reality of urban life, one woman navigates the blurred lines between survival and self-respect

Charlene is an underpaid but fiercely independent woman. Persuaded by her vivacious friend Judy, Charlene reluctantly enters the world of stripping and go-go dancing. The decision, initially seen as dubious, soon brings Charlene financial success and a newfound sense of self-respect. This empowerment becomes the catalyst for Charlene to reconcile with her family, addressing deeper personal and social conflicts.

Rudet’s sharp dialogue and poignant narrative capture the struggle for dignity and independence in a society that often marginalises its most vulnerable members. The play, set against the backdrop of Thatcher-era Britain, explores themes of economic survival, personal empowerment, and the complex dynamics of friendship and family.
