Synopsis
Prison & Alan’s Home
Alan sits in a dimly lit prison cell, the oppressive silence punctuated only by the distant echoes of metal doors clanging shut. In Clare Lizzimore’s Mint, we follow Alan’s tumultuous journey from incarceration to the challenges of reintegration into society. Set in two parts, the play spans over a decade, from 1995 to 2006, capturing Alan’s interactions with his family and the harsh realities of life behind bars.
Part one unfolds within the confines of the prison, where Alan’s sister, Stephanie, visits him, their conversations veering between painful honesty and forced cheerfulness. The sterile environment amplifies the emotional distance between them, as Alan navigates the prison’s stringent rules and the isolation from his loved ones. Part two shifts to Alan’s life post-release, where the once-familiar world now feels alien. Struggling to adapt, he faces the stigma of his past and the fragmented relationships with his family. Through intimate and poignant scenes, Lizzimore paints a raw and realistic portrait of a man grappling with his sense of identity and belonging.
