Mary folds clothes into a plastic bag, the fabric stained with blood, as the Furies—an ethereal chorus of women—watch silently. “Maryland” by Lucy Kirkwood thrusts us into a harrowing narrative where the ordinary is interwoven with the extraordinary, blending the stark realities of sexual violence with mythic elements of rage and retribution. As DC Moody questions Mary about her assault, another woman, also named Mary, enters, mirroring her trauma and adding layers to the exploration of violence against women.
The play vividly depicts the aftermath of assault and the often insensitive handling by law enforcement, highlighted by the surreal presence of the Furies who voice the collective fury and frustration of women. The Furies’ lines, interspersed with bureaucratic dialogue, underscore the dissonance between the victims’ experiences and societal responses. As the narrative unfolds, Mary’s interactions with DC Moody and DC Eddowes reveal a system ill-equipped to provide genuine support, forcing Mary to navigate her trauma within a framework that feels indifferent and mechanical.
