Synopsis
In this raw and revelatory monologue, an anonymous woman lays bare her innermost thoughts on desire, sexuality, and the female experience. Through the voice of a male performer, she explores the complex landscape of her fantasies, from tender to taboo, while grappling with societal expectations and her own conflicted feelings. From her first awkward stirrings of attraction to her evolving “toolbox” of masturbatory scenarios, she charts the evolution of her sexual psyche with unflinching honesty. The narrator delves into the often contradictory nature of fantasy versus reality, the power dynamics at play in her desires, and the guilt and confusion that can accompany women’s sexuality. As she reflects on aging, invisibility, and the double standards that persist between men and women, she invites the audience to confront their own assumptions and biases about female desire.
The play’s structure – a single, confessional monologue punctuated by moments of direct audience address – blurs the lines between performance and reality, challenging viewers to question their own responses to frank discussions of female sexuality. With biting humor and poignant self-reflection, “Manwatching” offers a provocative exploration of one woman’s inner life, forcing us to confront the complexities and contradictions of desire in a world still grappling with true sexual equality.
