Synopsis

Lela is a young woman who navigates through a tumultuous life marked by abuse and exploitation. The narrative is delivered through Lela’s perspective, blending poetic monologues with stark dialogues. The play begins with Lela’s early life, filled with familial tensions and a controlling father. Her life takes a dark turn when she is married off to a businessman who takes her across the border. Here, Lela finds herself trapped and exploited in a brothel under the guise of marriage. The play explores her resilience and survival amidst this oppressive reality, where she endures violence and dehumanisation. Throughout, Lela maintains a sense of identity and hope, even as she grapples with her circumstances.

The play is a powerful commentary on themes of gender violence, exploitation, resilience, and identity. It employs a non-linear narrative structure, interspersing Lela’s recounting of her past with present events, creating a hauntingly vivid and emotional portrayal of her struggles. The tone is a mix of dark realism and lyrical introspection, highlighting the brutality of Lela’s experiences while also capturing her inner strength and unyielding spirit.
