Synopsis
A middle-class family home in suburban Britain, where the walls seem to close in as emotions run high.
The Donnelly family finds themselves adrift in the wake of their daughter Lori’s return home following a suicide attempt at university. As they navigate the treacherous waters of guilt, fear, and unspoken resentments, each family member must confront their own role in Lori’s struggle. The kitchen table becomes a battlefield, the living room a confessional, as the Donnellys fumble towards understanding and reconciliation.
Caldwell’s nuanced and compassionate exploration of mental health within the family unit is both heart-wrenching and deeply human. The play’s linear structure and naturalistic dialogue allow for a raw, unflinching look at the ripple effects of trauma. Moments of awkward humour punctuate the tension, offering brief respites that highlight the family’s deep-seated love for one another. After the Attempt shines a powerful light on the often-overlooked aftermath of mental health crises, challenging audiences to consider the long road to healing and the vital importance of open communication.
