Synopsis

The Gill family living room in a suburb of a city

Jeeto, a matriarch in her sixties, navigates life with her son Pal, daughter-in-law Liz, and extended family. The play opens in their large, opulent home, reflecting their hard-earned success from running a family business. However, tensions rise when Jeeto’s brother-in-law Chacha requests money to support their family in India, highlighting the cultural and familial obligations they face. As the story unfolds, Pal’s business ambitions clash with his responsibilities, leading to significant strain within the family. Liz struggles with her place in the family, and the arrival of Reema, Pal’s cousin from India, further complicates the dynamics, especially when her relationship with Pal comes to light.

The play explores themes of family, cultural identity, and immigration. It is structured as a two-act play with a linear narrative. The tone fluctuates between humour and drama, capturing the complexities of familial relationships and cultural expectations. Bhatti’s writing style is vivid and realistic, with dialogues that bring the characters’ inner conflicts and cultural backgrounds to life. The setting, a modern British-Punjabi household, serves as a microcosm for the broader themes of class, social inequality, and gender roles.
