Synopsis

Captain Andrei Vukhov is one of seven Soviet officers captured by the Germans during World War II and entombed in the cellar of the monastery of St Peter Rabinovich. Stripped naked and left without food or water for sixty days, the officers resort to cannibalism to survive. When the Red Army retakes the monastery, Vukhov is found alive but insane. The play imagines Vukhov’s desperate attempt to describe and defend his actions, challenging the audience to judge him for his acts of murder and cannibalism.

The play delves into the darkest aspects of human nature, juxtaposing savagery with tenderness, and irony with despair. It is a raw and visceral experience that demands the audience to confront their own perceptions of sanity and morality, leaving them haunted by Dillon’s powerful portrayal and the relentless questioning of human resilience and ethics
