Synopsis

Exeter, 1942

Peter, an evacuee from London, finds a new home with the family in Exeter. As exams loom, Peter and Francis, the family’s son, grapple with their future aspirations. Meanwhile, June and Eric, Francis’ parents, navigate the grief brought by wartime raids.

The play delves into themes of grief; while the parents mourn lost opportunities, loved ones, and their former lives, the sons move forward, unburdened by the weight of past regrets and fears.

What our readers say

What’s it like reading this play now?

Feelings of grief are ephemeral and while it’s not the centre-piece of this film, war, and World War II will be topics we continue to discuss.

What does it tell us about the past and present?

We continue to suffer grief and loss and continue to struggle with thoughts of who we are and what we are doing in this life.
