Synopsis

A modest terraced house in a Derbyshire mining town, 1969. The Shaw family gathers for a celebration that will peel back layers of resentment, aspiration, and unspoken love.

Andrew, Colin, and Steven Shaw have each escaped their working-class roots, but find themselves drawn back into the web of their past. As the veneer of celebration wears thin, long-buried tensions and unresolved conflicts bubble to the surface.

Storey’s razor-sharp dialogue crackles with repressed emotion as the brothers confront their divergent paths: Andrew, the outwardly successful conformist; Colin, the rebellious artist; and Steven, torn between two worlds. Their interactions with their stoic father and doting mother reveal the deep psychological scars left by poverty, education, and thwarted ambitions.

As the night progresses and more truths emerge, In Celebration asks: Can we ever truly escape our origins? And what is the price of social mobility on both those who leave and those left behind?
