Synopsis

Jesse’s house in the Mississippi Delta

Jesse Davidson, a once-renowned blues guitarist presumed dead, lives in seclusion in a small house in the Mississippi Delta. His daughter Della cares for him while struggling with her own personal issues. Karl, a young white British rock musician, seeks out Jesse, driven by his admiration for the legendary bluesman and a desire to revive his own struggling career. The play opens with Karl breaking into Jesse’s house, leading to a tense but transformative encounter. As Karl and Jesse interact, Jesse’s complex past and reasons for faking his death are revealed. Karl’s persistent efforts to coax Jesse back into the limelight clash with Jesse’s contentment with his obscurity.

The play explores themes of identity, race, and redemption. The tone is a mix of nostalgia, tension, and dark humour, capturing the cultural and generational clashes between the characters. The style is naturalistic, with richly drawn characters and dialogue that authentically reflects the southern setting. The form is linear, following the interactions between Jesse, Karl, and Della as they navigate their intersecting lives and ambitions. The play’s episodic structure, punctuated by musical interludes, underscores the themes of legacy and the enduring power of music.
