Synopsis

Rosa, a 15-year-old girl, is living with her aunt Louise and Louise’s partner Tony in a house by the sea, following the death of Rosa’s mother Jo a year earlier. As Louise tries to move on from the past and establish a new life for herself and Rosa, tensions arise between the characters, particularly when Colin, Jo’s former friend and lover, visits and suggests that Jo would have wanted Rosa to live with him instead.

The play explores themes of family, love, loss, and the struggle to find meaning and purpose in life. It also touches on issues of class, social inequality, and politics, as the characters grapple with their differing worldviews and the legacy of Jo’s activism. The tone is often dark and unsettling, with moments of black humor and surreal imagery, such as the presence of Dogboy, a feral young man who appears at the house and is briefly taken in by the family. The non-linear structure and shifting power dynamics between the characters contribute to the play’s sense of unease and ambiguity.
