Synopsis

An unnamed city, present or near future

Jamie and Lisa, a couple living together, find their relationship and worldviews tested as a mysterious affliction spreads through the animal kingdom, causing erratic behavior and mass die-offs. As the situation escalates, societal structures break down, and the characters are forced to confront their own beliefs and actions in the face of an unprecedented crisis. The play follows the couple’s struggle, along with the experiences of Alex, her mother Nancy, and two men, John and Si, as they navigate the unfolding chaos.

“Human Animals” is a dark comedy that explores themes of environment, social inequality, love, and the human capacity for both destruction and compassion. The play employs a non-linear narrative structure, with scenes that alternate between different characters and time-frames, creating a fragmented and unsettling atmosphere. The dialogue is sharp and often laced with black humour, reflecting the absurdity and desperation of the characters’ situations.
