Synopsis

A Yorkshire farmhouse, where the isolation of the countryside contrasts sharply with the simmering tensions within a family.

Jack, a young poet struggling with his mental health, returns to the family farm after a period of absence. His parents, Sam and Margaret, and his sister, Jean, attempt to reintegrate him into the rhythms of rural life. However, Jack’s presence stirs up old resentments and unresolved conflicts among the family members. As Jack grapples with his inner demons, the family is forced to confront the strained relationships and buried traumas that lie beneath their seemingly quiet existence.

Translations is a poignant exploration of family dynamics, mental health, and the complexities of rural life. Storey delves into the emotional and psychological landscape of his characters, revealing the impact of isolation and unspoken grievances. The play’s realistic setting and detailed character studies create a compelling portrait of a family in turmoil, struggling to find common ground amidst their struggles.
