Synopsis

In a London flat, a couple’s journey to adopt a child becomes entangled with questions of identity, prejudice, and the courage to be oneself

Danny, a gay primary school teacher, and his partner Joe navigate the complexities of the adoption process while grappling with societal expectations and personal fears. Their path intersects with that of Jamie, Danny’s straight colleague, and his wife Lisa, as the two couples confront their own biases and the challenges of creating a family in contemporary Britain.

E.V. Crowe’s incisive drama explores themes of sexuality, parenthood, and the limits of tolerance in modern society. Through a series of tense encounters and revealing conversations, the play examines how even those who consider themselves progressive can harbour deep-seated prejudices. With sharp dialogue and complex characterizations, Hero offers a nuanced look at the ways in which personal identity and societal expectations clash, particularly in the realms of education and family-building.
