Synopsis

Casablanca, Morocco, 1975. The sun beats down on dusty streets and cramped apartment blocks

Young Hassan grows up in a working-class neighborhood, navigating the complexities of family, identity, and societal expectations. As he matures, Hassan becomes increasingly fascinated with the world beyond his immediate surroundings, particularly through his encounters with technology and the internet. His online relationship with Corine, a Swiss girl, opens up new horizons and challenges his perceptions of love and connection. Meanwhile, Hassan grapples with the realities of life in Morocco, including political unrest, economic hardship, and the allure of emigration.

Hassan Leklichés is a poignant exploration of coming-of-age in a rapidly changing Morocco. Essounani’s innovative blend of French, Arabic, and Darija (Moroccan Arabic) reflects the linguistic and cultural hybridity of contemporary Moroccan society. Through Hassan’s journey, the play delves into themes of cultural identity, globalisation, and the impact of technology on personal relationships. By juxtaposing Hassan’s virtual experiences with his physical reality, the play offers a nuanced commentary on the disconnect between digital aspirations and local realities in the developing world.
