South Lebanon, Sidon, Beirut, and Shatila Camp

Ghalia, a determined adolescent girl, navigates a tumultuous journey in South Lebanon, facing societal constraints and personal trials. Set against the backdrop of a small village and expanding across various locations, the play chronicles Ghalia’s escape from a life of limitations imposed by tradition and familial expectations. As she travels through a landscape scarred by conflict and patriarchy, Ghalia encounters a host of characters that shape her path, including her authoritarian mother, the supportive but conflicted Aunt Diba, and numerous others who embody the diverse struggles of the region.

The play explores themes of freedom, identity, resilience, and the quest for autonomy. The narrative captures the intersection of personal desire and socio-political realities, highlighting Ghalia’s growth as she defies expectations and seeks a life beyond her village’s confines. Through poetic dialogue and a blend of realism and lyrical storytelling, the play delves into the intricacies of a young woman’s fight for self-determination in a world that seeks to confine her.
