Synopsis

A boarding house where Sarah lives.

Sarah is a deeply conflicted and troubled character, torn between her African heritage and her desire to embrace a white identity. She lives in a boarding house and is haunted by different versions of herself, known as “funnyhouse ladies,” each representing different aspects of her identity. These include Queen Victoria Regina, Duchess of Hapsburg, Jesus, and Patrice Lumumba.

“Funnyhouse of a Negro” is a powerful exploration of identity, race, and the psychological scars of racism. It’s a deeply symbolic and surreal journey into the mind of a woman caught in a relentless struggle with herself and the world around her.
