Synopsis

A small coastal town in Japan

A traveling kabuki troupe, led by the charismatic and aging actor Kiyoshi, arrives to perform. The troupe’s presence stirs the quiet town, but beneath the surface of their theatrical performances lies a web of personal tensions and hidden secrets. Kiyoshi harbors a significant secret of his own: he has a son, Shinobu, who lives in the town and believes his father is a prosperous businessman, unaware of his true identity as a wandering actor.

Gotanda’s play is a poignant exploration of identity, legacy, and the passage of time. It delves into the complexities of familial relationships, especially the strained bond between Kiyoshi and Shinobu. As the troupe’s performances unfold, so too does the drama of Kiyoshi’s double life, leading to a confrontation that forces both father and son to confront the truths they have long avoided. The narrative is rich with themes of deception, the pursuit of dreams, and the inevitable decay of those dreams as reality intrudes.
