Synopsis

Scotland, post-abolition

Patrick is a freed Caribbean slave employed by Sir John Wedderburn, a Scottish plantation owner. The play begins with Patrick’s journey from enslavement to freedom, highlighting his struggles to navigate his newfound liberty in a society still marred by racial prejudices. As he endeavours to assert his identity and claim his rights, Patrick’s interactions with Sir John and his family reveal the deep-seated biases and power dynamics that persist despite the abolition of slavery. The narrative intricately weaves through moments of tension, confrontation, and unexpected alliances, ultimately leading to a dramatic and poignant climax.

Themes of race, social inequality, and abuse are central to “Enough of Him,” underscoring the complex legacy of slavery and its enduring impact on personal and societal relationships. The play also explores the notion of family, both by blood and by choice, as Patrick forges connections that defy traditional societal structures. The class divide between Patrick and the Wedderburns is starkly portrayed, illuminating the economic and social barriers that persist even after legal freedoms are granted. The intense personal and political conflicts within the play serve as a powerful commentary on the resilience of the human spirit in the face of systemic oppression.
