Synopsis

King Victoria and her lover, Florence Nightingale, navigate a surreal and dystopian world in Edward Bond’s “Early Morning.” Set in a fantastical version of Britain, the play presents a darkly comedic and satirical take on historical events and figures. The narrative unfolds in a dreamlike sequence, where the rigid boundaries between reality and fantasy blur, leading to a series of bizarre and grotesque events.

King Victoria, a fictionalized and male-presenting version of Queen Victoria, along with Florence Nightingale, engage in power struggles, sexual politics, and absurdly violent acts. The play explores themes of power, identity, and the absurdity of human existence. It delves into the grotesque and often surreal nature of political and personal relationships, questioning the very fabric of societal norms and historical accuracy.
