Synopsis

A fragmented urban landscape where reality and surrealism intertwine

Carrol, a young man adrift in a world of uncertainty, finds himself at the centre of a kaleidoscopic narrative that weaves together the lives of various characters caught in the throes of societal decay. As he navigates through a series of surreal encounters, including visits to a fortune teller and interactions with a mysterious Spanish lover, Carrol’s journey becomes a metaphor for the collective disorientation of a society in flux.

Gregory Motton’s Downfall is a darkly comic, absurdist exploration of social disintegration and the human struggle for meaning in a world that seems to have lost its moral compass. Through a series of fragmented scenes and characters – including Hetty, a woman battling alcoholism; Rolo, her enigmatic companion; and the Tower Man, a self-proclaimed prophet – Motton crafts a nightmarish vision of urban life that is both unsettling and darkly humorous.Downfall challenges audiences to confront uncomfortable truths about power, identity, and the human capacity for both cruelty and redemption in a world teetering on the brink of collapse.
