Synopsis

A modest London flat filled with the conflicting emotions of Jewish refugees in post-war Britain

Set in the immediate aftermath of World War II, the play explored the complex emotions and difficult decisions faced by Jewish refugees as they contemplated whether to return to Germany, the land that had once been their home but had also been the source of their persecution.

McLaeod’s work delved into the psychological trauma of displacement and the struggle for identity faced by these survivors. Through Augustine’s interactions with fellow refugees, the play examined the tension between the desire to reclaim a lost past and the fear of confronting painful memories. Dear Augustine offered a nuanced portrayal of the refugee experience, highlighting the personal toll of historical events and the challenge of rebuilding lives in the shadow of the Holocaust.
