Synopsis

Doreen’s house in Birkenhead

Doreen is the heart of a family grappling with modern disconnection and generational clashes. The play opens with her, her daughters Carmel and Sarah, and her granddaughter Megyn, all sitting around the dining table engrossed in their phones. This seemingly mundane scene quickly unravels to reveal deeper conflicts and unresolved tensions that simmer beneath the surface.

The narrative captures a slice of life as it explores themes of family dynamics, generational gaps, and the pervasive influence of technology on relationships. As Doreen navigates the complexities of her relationships with her daughters and the distant, screen-obsessed Megyn, the play delves into the characters’ struggles with communication, understanding, and connection. With sharp dialogue and moments of dark humour, “Cuckoo” paints a vivid picture of a family trying to bridge the gaps created by modern life and personal traumas.
