Synopsis

Various rural locations in England over two decades (1983, 1994, 2004)

Jamie Carris’s tumultuous journey through life is vividly captured in Simon Stephens’ powerful play. Spanning over two decades, the narrative unfolds against the stark and often unforgiving backdrop of rural England. The story kicks off in 1983 with a young and rebellious Jamie, along with his girlfriend Lynsey, planning a daring escape in a stolen car. This impulsive act sets off a chain of events that will ripple through the years, defining and redefining Jamie’s path.

As the years pass, we witness Jamie’s evolution from a brash teenager to a man weighed down by the consequences of his choices. Each of the four acts offers a poignant snapshot of his life at critical junctures: moments of love, moments of crime, and moments of desperate search for redemption. The rural settings—spanning from desolate landscapes to intimate domestic scenes—mirror Jamie’s inner turmoil and relentless quest for meaning. Through love, loss, and fleeting moments of hope, Country Music paints a raw and unflinching portrait of a life marked by struggle and yearning for a sense of belonging.
