Synopsis

A multicultural neighborhood in Southall, London, during the turbulent late 1970s

In Hanif Kureishi’s provocative drama Borderline, the simmering tensions of race relations in 1970s Britain come to a boil. Set against the backdrop of Southall’s diverse community, the play explores the volatile interactions between Asian immigrants, white residents, and the far-right National Front. As riots threaten to tear the neighborhood apart, Kureishi delves deep into the complex web of racial prejudice, cultural identity, and the struggle for belonging in a rapidly changing society.

Through a large ensemble cast of 13 characters (7 male, 6 female), Kureishi offers a kaleidoscopic view of a community on the brink. The play’s structure, likely episodic given its Joint Stock Theatre Group origins, allows for a nuanced exploration of multiple perspectives and experiences. Borderline grapples with themes of immigration, racism, and the rise of far-right ideologies, presenting a raw and unflinching portrait of a nation grappling with its postcolonial identity.
