Synopsis
A flat overlooking Clapham Junction, present day
Florence, a Jamaican woman, returns home from visiting her daughter in Manchester to find her estranged sister Martha (now calling herself Cherise) has come to stay. Fair to say she’s not thrilled by this surprise visit – especially when Martha says she might be staying for 6 months! Florence’s friend Eunice doesn’t like Martha being around either, she’s threatened by her presence and worries she’ll take her friend away. Meanwhile, Martha is disappointed to discover London is NOT what she expected.
The writing in this piece is intimate and beautifully understated, masterfully evoking deep and complex emotions. While conflict is present, it is the warmth and profound love shared among the three women that truly defines the narrative. Their interactions and connections, characterised by both tenderness and intensity, form the heart of the story, creating a rich tapestry of human experience.
