Synopsis

Trinidad, 1975. In an allegorical landscape, three slaves confront the embodiments of colonial power, grappling with the physical and psychological chains of oppression

Slave A, Slave B, and Slave C find themselves in a symbolic confrontation with a white woman, a priest, and a judge, representing the various facets of colonial authority. As they navigate this oppressive terrain, their struggle becomes a powerful exploration of race, power, and identity in the aftermath of slavery.

Mustapha Matura’s provocative drama blends stark realism with symbolic fable to expose the brutal legacy of colonialism. Through direct and raw dialogue, the play oscillates between harrowing confrontations and moments of intense reflection, challenging audiences to confront the historical and ongoing impacts of racial oppression. With a non-linear narrative and minimalist staging, Black Slaves; White Chains offers a universal yet deeply personal examination of the black experience, emphasizing the enduring psychological bonds imposed by systemic racism.
