Synopsis

A university campus in 1960s Britain, where youthful idealism clashes with ingrained tradition.

Tania, a bright but conflicted young student, finds herself torn between her strict suburban upbringing and her burgeoning relationship with Malcolm, a Jewish biochemistry student. As their romance blossoms, Tania faces increasing pressure from her overbearing mother, who views Malcolm as an unacceptable match. Meanwhile, Malcolm grapples with his own family’s expectations and his desire for independence.

Rosen’s sharp dialogue and astute observations paint a vivid picture of a society in flux. The play masterfully weaves together themes of generational conflict, religious identity, and the struggle for personal autonomy. Through Tania’s journey, we witness the painful yet liberating process of breaking free from familial constraints. The intimate setting of university life becomes a microcosm for broader social changes, as characters navigate the choppy waters of interfaith relationships and changing social norms.
