Synopsis

In Timberlake Wertenbaker’s adaptation of “Antigone,” the main character, Antigone, defies the edict of King Creon to bury her brother Polynices, who is deemed a traitor. Set against the backdrop of a war-torn Thebes, Antigone’s act of defiance sparks a moral and political conflict that questions authority, justice, and familial duty. This adaptation vividly portrays the struggle between individual conscience and state law, weaving in contemporary resonances and sharp dialogue that capture the timeless essence of Sophocles’ tragedy. Through powerful performances and a modern lens, Wertenbaker’s “Antigone” brings the ancient tale into a new, urgent light.
