Synopsis

A struggling playwright breaks the fourth wall to present a series of fragmented scenes exploring adoption, creativity, and self-doubt.

Rob, a mid-twenties playwright, confesses to the audience his failure to complete a play. Instead, he presents disjointed scenes featuring Jules and Abby, a lesbian couple navigating the adoption of their daughter Viveka. As Rob grapples with his insecurities and professional pressures, the narrative weaves between his candid monologues and the family’s poignant interactions.

This metatheatrical drama explores themes of artistic integrity, parenthood, and the search for self-worth in contemporary Britain. Through a blend of humour and pathos, the play examines the creative process, the challenges of non-traditional families, and the universal struggle to meet societal expectations. With its innovative structure and frank exploration of personal failings, An Apology offers a raw and honest look at the intersections of art, identity, and love.
