Synopsis

A shabby, overcrowded house in Coventry, England, during the 1960s.

In the grim and stifling confines of a dilapidated house in Coventry, Michael Carney, the eldest of five Irish brothers, struggles to maintain a semblance of order and normalcy amidst the chaos. The play opens with Michael desperately trying to settle his raucous family as they prepare for the arrival of their father and youngest brother, Des. The house, much like their lives, is a tangle of disarray, a stark symbol of the internal and external conflicts that plague them. Michael, who has married an English woman, Betty, finds himself caught between his responsibilities as the head of the family and his desire to escape the violent legacy of his father’s influence. His brothers, particularly the brutish Harry and the volatile Iffy, embody the toxic masculinity and unrelenting aggression that defines their clan, leaving Michael to navigate a path fraught with tension and latent violence.
