Synopsis

A small, cluttered apartment in a bustling urban neighbourhood

Jim’s journey is a vivid descent into the depths of human longing and existential despair. As a psychotherapist, Jim’s professional veneer begins to crack when confronted with Liz, a patient whose dreams and desires mirror his own suppressed yearnings. The intimate sessions with Liz become a mirror reflecting Jim’s own dissatisfaction and latent desires, propelling him into a spiral of introspection and ethical ambiguity. Liz’s vivid dreams and the emotional intensity of their sessions highlight the theme of desire’s corrosive power, eroding the boundaries Jim once held firm.

The narrative arc intensifies as Jim’s personal life unravels, revealing the fragility beneath his composed exterior. His marriage to Bernice, a detective, is strained by miscommunication and unmet needs, symbolized by their son Bobby’s defiant nonconformity. The domestic scenes are rich with dark humour and existential dread, underscoring Jim’s growing sense of inadequacy. The blurring of his professional and personal life leads to a dramatic unraveling of his psyche, as the weight of unfulfilled desires and the oppressive reality around him take their toll. Jim’s arc is a poignant exploration of the devastating impact of unfulfilled aspirations and the relentless corrosion of desire.
