Synopsis

2071

Chris Rapley, a climate scientist takes the audience on a journey through his career and the history of climate change research. The play, written as a monologue for Rapley, explores the scientific evidence for human-induced climate change and its potential consequences for the planet and humanity. Rapley discusses his experiences as a researcher, from studying the Antarctic ice sheets to working with satellite data, and how these experiences have shaped his understanding of the Earth’s climate system.

Throughout the play, Rapley presents the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and other scientific bodies, explaining the complex interactions between the atmosphere, oceans, ice, and land that drive the Earth’s climate. He emphasizes the unprecedented nature of the current climate crisis and the need for urgent action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change. The play concludes with Rapley’s reflections on the moral and ethical dimensions of the climate crisis, and his hope that human ingenuity and collaboration can help create a sustainable future for generations to come.
