Synopsis

In the vibrant, pulsing heart of St Pauls, Bristol, 1960s, a Caribbean family’s cramped living room becomes a battleground of faith, desire, and identity

Preacher is a man teetering on the precipice of moral collapse. His struggle to maintain a facade of piety while grappling with earthly temptations sends shockwaves through his family and the tight-knit Caribbean community. As his children yearn to embrace the freedoms of their adopted home, his wife clings desperately to the traditions that once anchored them. The house becomes a pressure cooker of generational conflict, simmering with unspoken desires and stifled dreams.

Alfred Fagon’s play crackles with wit and heartache, blending moments of uproarious comedy with searing drama. The lyrical patois of the characters dances off the tongue, a linguistic tug-of-war between old world and new. Through the Preacher’s fall from grace, Fagon delivers a nuanced exploration of hypocrisy, the weight of community expectations, and the often painful process of cultural adaptation.
