Stef Smith is a Scottish playwright, originally from Stirling, Scotland, whose work is rooted in examining social and political themes. She studied Drama and Theatre Arts with a specialism in directing at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, developing a style that looks into both the light and dark sides of life, often revealing unheard stories. Known for her travels and collaborative work worldwide, Smith has led workshops in India and Brazil and lectured at Glasgow University, all while drawing inspiration from her global experiences.
Her career milestones include winning an Olivier Award in 2012 for RoadKill, followed by a residency at Canada’s Banff Centre in 2013. Named on The List’s Top 100 Cultural Contributors for 2015, she was recognised by The Independent as one of the British playwrights set to shape the future of theatre. Most recently, she won Best Writer at the 2022 Royal Television Society Awards for Float, her young adult series, affirming her impact in both theatre and television.
