Nina Segal was born in 1988 and raised in South London. She studied drama at Bristol University and started her career as a General Assistant at the Donmar Warehouse in 2008. She had always dreamed of working in New York and a few days before Christmas 2011, after sending a speculative email to the artistic director of Off-Broadway theatre 59E59, she was offered a job on the condition that she could make it before the New Year, which she did.
Segal spent several years in New York, returning to the UK in 2013 to work as an associate producer at the Gate Theatre. She then transitioned to playwriting, spending time in Amsterdam living in a van and writing in a converted shipping container. During this period, she wrote two plays.
Her debut play, In the Night Time (Before the Sun Rises) (2016), a portrayal of parental anxiety, premiered at the Gate Theatre. Other notable works include Big Guns (2017) at the Yard Theatre.
Segal’s later works reveal a shift from themes of fear and horror, but still explore themes of interconnectedness and are marked by psychological tension, modern issues, and the blending of surrealism with reality.
Her play Shooting Hedda Gabler (2023) was staged at the Rose Theatre. Segal has earned several accolades, including the 2022 Playwright’s Scheme Award, and has been shortlisted for the George Devine Award. She has written for television, including the series Hanna (2011), and has been commissioned by institutions like the Royal Shakespeare Company, Soho Theatre, and the Dutch National Opera.
In 2024, Segal was appointed as an Associate Playwright at the Royal Court, where she contributes to the theatre’s artistic programming and support of emerging writers.
