Mohammad Al Attar, born in Damascus in 1980, is a Syrian playwright and dramaturg living in Berlin. He studied English literature at the University of Damascus and theatre studies at the Higher Institute for Dramatic Arts, later earning a master’s in applied drama from Goldsmiths University in London. His works, focusing on the Syrian conflict and refugees, have been staged internationally, such as at the Royal Court Theatre and the Lincoln Center in New York. Al Attar’s earliest play, Withdrawal, was performed in a cramped apartment in his hometown Damascus. In 2011, he co-wrote a short play, After the Spring.
Al Attar’s has also contributed magazine articles particularly directed towards the Syrian revolution.
