Eugène Ionesco was a Romanian-born French playwright and a leading figure in the Theatre of the Absurd. His notable works include The Bald Soprano (1950), The Chairs (1952), and Rhinoceros (1959). Ionesco’s writing is characterised by its satirical examination of the banality of bourgeois society and the absurdity of human existence. His innovative use of language and unconventional narrative structures challenged traditional theatrical forms, influencing contemporary drama. In 1970, he was elected to the Académie Française, recognising his significant contributions to French literature.
