Emteaz Hussain

Stage Debut

2008

Emteaz Hussain is a British playwright and performance poet whose work often explores themes of identity, community, and social justice. Her debut play, Sweet Cider (2008), was produced by Tamasha Theatre Company at the Arcola Theatre and later included in the anthology Plays for Today by Women (2013). Hussain’s subsequent play, Blood (2015), also produced by Tamasha, toured nationally and received critical acclaim for its portrayal of young British Asian experiences.

In 2020, she adapted Alex Wheatle’s novel Crongton Knights for Pilot Theatre, with the production touring the UK. Hussain has been commissioned by the Royal Court Theatre for the play Expendable (2024), which examines the impact of sexual abuse scandals on communities. Her writing is characterised by its authentic dialogue and focus on underrepresented voices, reflecting her background in workshop facilitation across various community settings.

As a performance poet, Hussain has toured nationally and internationally, performing with groups such as Transglobal Underground and as a backing poet with the Benjamin Zephaniah band. She was listed on the BBC New Talent Hotlist in 2017.
