David Ireland is a Northern Irish playwright and actor known for his dark humour and provocative themes. His work often confronts issues of identity, sectarianism, and the legacy of violence in Northern Ireland. He attended the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, before receiving training at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
His play Cyprus Avenue (2016), which explores the psychological impact of political conflict, won multiple awards, including the Irish Times Theatre Award for Best New Play. Ireland’s writing is marked by its fearless exploration of controversial topics and its sharp, often uncomfortable humour.
