Carson Kreitzer is an American playwright, lyricist, and librettist known for her thought-provoking explorations of power, morality, and societal displacement. Her works often follow historical and contemporary figures, examining their flaws and humanity. Notable themes in her plays include the ethical dilemmas of scientific discovery, as seen in The Love Song of J. Robert Oppenheimer (2003), and the societal pressures that lead to violence, explored in Self Defense, or death of some salesmen (2001). Kreitzer’s writing is characterised by its deep characterisation and willingness to confront uncomfortable truths. She is also the co-creator of Lempicka (2018), a musical about the life and art of painter Tamara de Lempicka, reflecting her fascination with extraordinary women and the intersection of art and history. Among her many honours, Kreitzer has received a Guggenheim Fellowship for her contributions to contemporary theatre.
