Brian Friel was an Irish playwright and author. Born near Omagh, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, he was the son of Patrick Friel, a primary school teacher and later a councillor, and Mary McLoone. Friel’s education included attendance at St. Columb’s College in Derry and later St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth. He initially worked as a teacher before dedicating himself to writing. His extensive body of work includes over thirty plays, with notable works such as Philadelphia, Here I Come! (1964), Translations (1980), and Dancing at Lughnasa (1990), which won three Tony Awards, including Best Play. Friel was a member of Aosdána, the society of Irish artists, and was honoured with numerous awards throughout his career.
