Anthony Neilson is a Scottish playwright and director known for his bold, often confrontational style of writing. His work is associated with in-yer-face theatre, a movement characterised by shocking and provocative content. Neilson’s plays frequently explore themes of violence, sexuality, and human psychology, as seen in The Censor (1997) and Stitching (2002). He has also worked extensively at the Royal Court Theatre, where many of his plays have been staged. Neilson is known for his collaborative approach to playwriting, often developing scripts through rehearsal with actors, a method that gives his work a raw and immediate quality.
Neilson spoke to Simon Stephens in S1 Ep9 of Playwright’s Podcast.
