Her early involvement in the civil rights movement, including participation in the 1969 People’s Democracy march, profoundly influenced her literary voice.

Devlin’s acclaimed play Ourselves Alone (1985) delves into the lives of three women amid the Northern Irish conflict, offering a nuanced perspective on the Troubles. Her short story “Naming the Names” further examines the personal dimensions of political turmoil. In 1998, she penned the screenplay for Titanic Town, a film depicting a woman’s efforts to shield her family from the surrounding violence in Belfast.

Throughout her career, Devlin has received numerous accolades, including the Samuel Beckett Award for Television Drama and the Hennessy Literary Award for short stories.
