Amma Asante MBE is a BAFTA Award winning screenwriter, film director, and actress from Lambeth in London. She was the first Black director to win a BAFTA Film Award for writing and directing a feature film. Asante has contributed a large body of work to film and television and was named an MBE by Queen Elizabeth in the Queen’s Birthday Honour’s list, for Services to Film as a Writer and Director. She is a member of the American Academy of Motion Picture, Arts and Sciences, and has twice been elected to the council of The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).

Asante’s films include include Belle and A United Kingdom. She has also directed on the Handmaids Tale and the acclaimed limited series, Mrs America.

In 2020, Asante contributed a letter in collaboration with nine other writers for My White Best Friend (and Other Letters Left Unsaid).
